Geoff –
Sweet delivered hard-hitting material on this album that is at least equal to what bands like Sabbath, Heep and Purple were releasing at the time. Essential! Their BEST album! Originally released in 1976, ‘Give Us A Wink’ features the classic Sweet lineup: Brian Connolly, Steve Priest, Andy Scott and Mick Tucker. Sweet were at their peak at this stage of their career and impressively proving that they didn’t need the hit writing / production duo Chinn and Chapman to be successful. There are some very heavy numbers amongst this lot, like “Cockroach” and “Keep It In” and the musicianship is incredibly tight. Often disregarded as a mere bubblegum pop group, Sweet delivered hard-hitting material on this album that is at least equal to what bands like Sabbath, Heep and Purple were releasing at the time. Included is one of their best singles “Action” plus the fine piano / harmonica accompanied “4th of July”, while “Healer” is a pulsing atmospheric, rhythmic number. This high quality Japanese pressing flips the tracks around somewhat and adds the 1975 single version of "Fox On The Run" & alternate rendition of "Lady Starlight" as bonus cuts. Essential Sweet!
