Geoff –
One of Neil's finest works... an album that embraces a wonderful blend of folk, rock & country ~ easily one of the all-time best of its genre. In 1972 this unassuming album went to the number 1 spot on the American charts ~ and deservedly so. Containing the beautiful hit single “Heart of Gold”, ‘Harvest’ is a consistently good collection of Neil Young songs, complete with lots of steel guitars and guest Linda Ronstadt providing backing vocals. The aforementioned “Heart of Gold” plus the moving “Old Man” are fantastic representations of Neil’s true songwriting talent. However, it is the gentle but intensely emotional penultimate cut “The Needle and the Damage Done” that is the most memorable piece from ‘Harvest’. In it Neil sings openly of losing a friend to smack. The contrasting “Words (Between the Lines of Age)” which closes the album is a fairly lengthy, powerful piece that is about as rock-orientated as this recording gets. ‘Harvest’ is one of Neil’s finest works and when heard its 10 songs all send a tingle down the listener’s spine. It is an album that embraces a wonderful blend of folk, rock and country ~ easily one of the all-time best of its genre.
