The amazing epic on 'Going for the One' is "Awaken", described by singer / director, Jon Anderson as "the greatest piece of Yes music". In 1976 Rick Wakeman re-joined Yes and together in Switzerland they created this wonderful album. It was the era of punk rock and Yes accordingly trimmed the length of their songs -- with the longest track running a mere sixteen and a half minutes. (All their albums in the previous five years had included songs that took up an entire side of an LP!). The amazing epic on 'Going for the One' is "Awaken", described by singer / director, Jon Anderson as "the greatest piece of Yes music". It can be an almost spiritual experience with every listen and has a timeless feel to it. The lightening fast piano intro from Wakeman builds intricately into a mesmerising rhythm which features all Yes members on various percussive instruments. Steve Howe's guitar playing is particularly astounding as he weaves throughout the piece and then with masterful ease, switches the mood into the gentle finale. "Awaken" alone makes 'Going for the One' worth getting, but there is also the steel driven, hard rocking title track and three more gems. "Turn of the Century" is one of the most beautiful, moving (mainly accoustic) songs imaginable and "Wonderous Stories" is the gentle, melodic single that went to number seven in the U.K. charts. "Parallels" was going to be on bassist, Chris Squire's solo LP 'Fish Out Of Water' but the other guys insisted it be included on the this album instead -- so it could be given the full Yes treatment! The bass-led radiant power of "Parallels" made it an ideal opening number on the 'Going for the One' tour. Spirits were high for the making of 'Going for the One' and it was the last truly great album of the seventies.
