Sade at her finest; elegant, sophisticated, and timelessly cool. Sade came onto the scene a year before this with the ubiquitous "Smooth Operator", and while it stands on its own as a smooth classic, it wasn't until Promise that Sade hit her artistic stride, implementing more traditional jazz elements and focusing on her true vocal prowess. With all the focus on frontwoman Sade Adu, it's easy to forget that Sade is also a tight and remarkably mature band. That collaborative element on their sophomore effort makes this mid-80's classic sound like nothing else from that period; elegant, sophisticated, and timelessly cool. In addition to the obvious impeccable singing is the remarkable songwriting in its own right. The tunes are cleverly crafted and allow for sultry saxophone interplay that is nonpareil. This is Sade at her finest, in an album where all the pieces fit together. Promise is meant to be listened to from beginning to end, as it is one long suite that runs the gamut.
