A brilliant live statement from Roxy, as they push the boundaries of rock music. With monster bassist John Wetton and multi-instrumentalist, Eddie Jobson augmenting the classic Roxy line-up, 'Viva!' is a brilliant live statement from the band, as they push the boundaries of rock music. Ex-Zappa musician Jobson added depth to the sound, as demonstrated on the opener "Out of the Blue" with his fiery electric violin playing. The glorious "Pyjamarama" moves onto the weirdness of "The Bogus Man", accompanied by subtle guitar work from Phil Manzanera, heavy bass work by Wetton and sci-fi synth from Jobson. "Chance Meeting" is brooding and mysterious, then the mighty "Both Ends Burning" explodes, with rock solid drumming from Paul Thompson and a blistering guitar solo. "If There is Something" is a jam epic, with some magnificent trade-off's between Andy Mackay's sax and Manzanera. "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" is menacing and downright disturbing, the band dragging out the eerie oppressiveness of the opening section for maximum effect. Then the whole joint blows up into overdrive, a delirious cacophony of sounds. This cracking album finishes in style with "Do the Strand" which lightens the atmosphere for a sing and dance-along. A great addition to any collection, 'Viva!' is a fantastic live LP. The playing throughout is tight as can be, the sound is crystal clear. Absolutely faultless -- except it should have been a double album!
