On their second release, Rainbow hit a home run. 'Rising' can legitimately be mentioned in the same breath as classic Deep Purple. On their second release, Rainbow not only avoid the sophomore jinx; they hit a home run. After replacing the entire band (except Ronnie James Dio) immediately following the recording of the first album, Ritchie Blackmore and the Rising lineup (Blackmore; Dio; Tony Carey, keys; Jimmy Bain, bass; and the late, great Cozy Powell, drums) had plenty of time on the road touring the first album to get the chops and material together for their second. In particular, "Stargazer" really came together on the 1975 tour and featured stunning keyboard work from Carey. The material is uniformly strong, with "Starstruck" and "A Light in the Black" standing out in particular. Ronnie Dio turns in a great vocal on the stunningly direct (under three minutes!) "Do You Close Your Eyes." All six songs on the album are up there with anything the band has done, before or since. The playing has a very tight, colorful feel to it, which was lacking a bit on the first record. This album can legitimately be mentioned in the same breath as classic Deep Purple.

My favourite Rainbow album -- Blackmore, Dio & Powell in epic mode, playing at the top of their game! Magic!!!!! This has always been my favourite Rainbow album -- Ritchie Blackmore in total epic mode, playing at the top of his game! I vividly remember the day I got it, won on the radio because I answered the tough question "Who is the keyboard player in Deep Purple?" I even got it a couple of days before it hit the shelves in record stores, by which time I had thrashed it, at very high volume!! I loved the first Rainbow LP and thought it was going to be a mission for Ritchie to better... but 'Rising' does just that! "Stargazer" alone was enough to blow everyone anyway, being Blackmore's answer to Led Zep's "Kashmir" with Eastern arrangements, Cozy Powell pounding the drums like there was no tomorrow, and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra thrown in for good measure. "A Light In Black" is another blinder, featuring furious fretwork and the whole band cooking full on. This is also easily one of Ronnie James Dio's finest efforts, as he sings powerfully through fantastic heavy numbers, such as "Tarot Woman", "Starstruck" and "Do You Close Your Eyes". I had initially thought the production of 'Rising' was a bit thin, but discovered that was just the mastering on my NZ original -- what a huge difference in sound there was, when I got a Japanese pressing! Magic!!!!! (5 Stars)
