A "plastic soul" masterpiece that features John Lennon, David Sanborn & Luther Vandross At this point in his career, Bowie was greatly influenced by the black soul / r&b music emerging from Philadelphia at that time. 'Young Americans' was his attempt at "plastic soul" and was an experiment that provided him with his most successful album so far. The album features legendary sax man, David Sanborn and a backing singer who was relatively unknown at the time -- Luther Vandross. The "Young Americans" title track is a masterpiece, and "Fame" (with John Lennon) has a beat so funky that James Brown ripped it off! Lennon also appears on the Thin White Duke’s rendition of The Beatles hit, “Across the Universe”.
