2006: The Red Hot Chili Peppers album ‘Stadium Arcadium’ went to No.1 on the US & UK charts.
2017: Death of singer / songwriter / keyboardist / guitarist, Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band [aged 69]. Another great muso gone… Gregg Allman and his big brother, Duane, started Southern Rock music as we know it and made one of the most incredible live albums ever recorded ~ The Allman Brothers Band ‘At Fillmore East’. Gregg lived 45 years longer than his brother, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident not long after the classic double live album was released in 1971. Gregg kept The Allman Brothers Band touring and recording on and off since then, in honour of his fallen brother. Rest in Peace, Duane & Gregg.
2024: Death of New Zealand trombonist / bandleader / promoter / educator, Rodger Fox [aged 71]. Fox won many awards and honours, including New Zealand Jazz Recording of the Year (four times) and Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to music. He was conferred with an honorary doctorate (DMus) by Massey University in 2005.
Happy 66th Birthday to Neil Finn! One of New Zealand’s finest songwriters, Neil has been a driving force in legendary kiwi bands Split Enz (with brother, Tim), Crowded House and various solo projects. I have seen him play live with all of the above and he always delivers his songs in style, with a great sense of humour. Coincidentally, I have two brothers named Neil & Tim. 🙂
Also, Happy Birthday to Sean Kinney of Alice in Chains! Taken from the best AIC LP, ‘Dirt’, this fan made video of “Would” is way better than the official one. Great drumming from Sean too!
