From the dramatic and haunting echo of “The Hanging Tree” through to the epic prog title track, ‘Firefly’ is consistently excellent! 4 ½ Stars Recorded in October & November, 1976, ‘Firefly’ was the first album that Heep released without singer, David Byron. John Lawton had been recruited from Lucifer’s Friend to replace him and it is immediately apparent that he has a great voice! With new proficient bassist, Trevor Bolder (previously part of Bowie’s Spiders From Mars), the chemistry for this line-up was spot on! Highlights include the emotional ballad, “Wise Man’ and drummer Lee Kerslake’s song, “Who Needs Me”, a super-charged boogie rocker that goes off like a firecracker! From the dramatic and haunting echo of “The Hanging Tree” through to the epic prog title track, ‘Firefly’ is consistently excellent, with the group proving yet again that they had fantastic songs, fine performances and talent to burn! 4 ½ Stars
