Five years ago today, I was very saddened to hear of the passing of legendary bassist / singer / songwriter, John Wetton. I first heard his monstrous bass playing and golden voice on the incredible 1972 – 1974 period of King Crimson albums, ‘Larks’ Tongues in Aspic’, ‘Starless and Bible Black’, ‘Red’ & ‘USA’. From there, John went on to play with Roxy Music (‘Viva’), Uriah Heep (‘Return to Fantasy’ & ‘High and Mighty’), UK (‘UK’, ‘Danger Money’ & ‘Night After Night’), before leading the supergroup Asia to massive success in the 1980s. He also contributed to countless projects, sessions and live performances, most notably with his Asia band mate, Geoff Downes. Mr. Wettton was a huge talent and will be greatly missed.
